Help Jamaica Rise Again After Hurricane Melissa

Dear Friend of Jamaica,

Jamaica has been ravaged by the brutal forces of the only category 5 hurricane to make landfall in recent history, leaving in its wake destruction of property and the loss of many lives. Many people have lost all their physical positions and will need to rebuild their lives.

The Global Starfish Foundation, a New Jersey-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, has initiated a drive in partnership with Jamaican governmental entities to transport and deliver essential resources to individuals with the greatest needs.

Your generosity will have a significant impact on the recovery effort and may even save lives. As the arduous task of rebuilding begins, we would like to play our part with your help in providing the necessary supplies to complete the mission.

Starfish Affordable Housing

Global Starfish Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and maintaining safe, affordable, environmentally sustainable housing for our society’s most vulnerable and needy. Families with children struggle to make ends meet, and we believe that everyone deserves to live in affordable housing that does not deny them the other necessities in life. Senior citizens living on limited income need housing that provides comfortable living at a reasonable price.

Global Starfish Foundation recognizes that the need for affordable housing far exceeds the availability in New Jersey and is redefining affordable, low-income housing. They revitalize communities, promote upward mobility, and build a more humane housing environment. Our housing communities provide safe, attractive, and welcoming environments where residents can live and flourish.

We aim to identify, acquire, and renovate existing homes and develop new affordable rental properties in suitable locations where we can provide affordable housing to low- and moderate-income families and senior citizens in New Jersey. Our experienced team of dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds oversees the marketing, leasing, compliance, resident services, and operational management of the communities we serve.

Starfish Mental Health Awareness and Support

Community interventions to promote mental health and social equity.

Community interventions are defined as those that involve multi-sector partnerships, emphasize community members as integral to the intervention, and/or deliver services in community settings. Multi-sector and community-based mental healthcare approaches in the US and Jamaica can help address health and social inequities by promoting social well-being and addressing structural determinants of mental health. One initiative to decrease the duration of untreated psychosis and increase referrals from the community is through early psychosis psychoeducational workshops with community organizations (e.g., housing and social services, youth services, cultural and faith groups, police, colleges, and employment agencies).

Individuals experiencing homelessness globally are at increased risk for mental illness, trauma, suicide, and medical comorbidities, along with a reduced life expectancy compared with the general population. It is believed that nearly 40% of jail and prison inmates report a history of mental illness, and this prevalence is higher among those with more arrests and time served in a correctional facility. Community interventions in collaboration with the criminal justice system should be well positioned to address health disparities experienced by justice-involved populations and the vulnerabilities to justice involvement experienced by those with mental illness in the community.

Starfish Foundation intends to partner with community-level prevention planning and implementation systems with primary foci on preventing youth (school grades 6–9) substance use, violence, and delinquency and secondary foci on depression, suicide, and other mental health outcomes. The Starfish Foundation will identify community stakeholders, assist in forming a community coalition if not in place, assist in developing a community profile to identify risk and protective factors related to youth health and behavior problems, assist with the creation of a community action plan, and implementation and evaluation of the programs.

Starfish for Veterans

Global Starfish Foundation (GSF) and its Starfish for Veterans is proud to recognize and honor the countless contributions and sacrifices of Veterans of the United States Armed Forces. We understand that many Americans struggle financially to cover the basics like rent, utilities, and food in our current economic times.

Fight Homelessness, Eviction, and Foreclosure among Veterans

We recognize that many veterans face foreclosure, eviction, and homelessness. Global Starfish and its partners, Torrent Realty Group and Trimega Capital, provide financial assistance to veterans and veteran organizations to prevent the eviction of a military family.

Perform Home Repairs or Household Chores for a Veteran in Need

Many veterans need help with home repairs because of a disability, severe injury, or a lack of financial resources. We identify veterans each year and improve their home appearance and curb appeal to make the home more comfortable and appealing. Starfish for veterans will continue to make a difference: one veteran at a time. To that one…we know it mattered.

Global Starfish Foundation invites you to join us in showing your gratitude for the sacrifices made and support veterans, even in a small gesture that can have a significant impact.
